For a musical performer, the ability to sight read means the skill of reading music from the score and being able to perform instantly, with accuracy, the notes written down, even if he or she has not seen the score or heard the piece before. Not all singers have this ability. It is not essential for the solo performer, as the process of private and integrated rehearsal usually provides time to get to know the notes before practising the finer points of technical and other interpretation.
